7-2. The mixed behavior of those who believe in the gospel but also believe that they must keep the law
The gospel is about being free from sin and being guided by the Holy
Spirit, but those who are under the law are still sinners. Therefore, the law
of the Holy Spirit and the law cannot coexist.
Romans 8:6-9 『For
to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Because the carnal mind is hostile to God; for it does not submit to God's law,
nor indeed can it. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not
in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But
if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.』
Those who follow the Spirit do not follow the law. Romans 8:2 says,
"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from
the law of sin and death." Nevertheless, there are legalists who say that
they follow the Spirit but still believe that they must keep the law. The
apostle Paul said in Galatians 3:1-3, "How foolish of you, Galatians! Who
has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as
crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by
the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having
begun by the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?"
Today, people in church
communities also say vaguely that it is good to believe in the gospel but also
keep the law. They ask evangelicals, “Does that mean that we do not have to keep the Ten
Commandments, which are God’s
commands?”
Keeping the Ten Commandments does not mean that we must keep them literally or
that we do not have to keep them. Keeping them means that we must keep the
words of the Bible in our hearts and receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
For example, the Ten
Commandments say, “You
shall have no other gods before me.” Other gods would mean idols. Do the people of the
church community know exactly who the one and only God is that confidently
says, “I
am.” When we say the Trinity, we
mean God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. If we believe in the
idea of the
Trinity, doesn’t
that mean we are believing in another god besides the one and only God? And we
cannot guarantee that the god that each individual believer believes in is necessarily
the same god that other believers believe in. Anyone who is guided by the Holy
Spirit can realize that the resurrected Jesus is the one and only God.
"Do not make any idols
and do not bow down to them," he said, but church people are worshiping the
cross as if it were an idol. The core of Christianity is the death and
resurrection of Jesus. The cross is an expression of death, but it is becoming
like an idol.
"Do not take the name of
the Lord in vain," it says, but people in today's church communities take
the name of the Lord in vain. In Exodus 3:14, it says, "And God said to
Moses, 'I am that I am.' And he said, 'Thus you shall say to the children of
Israel, 'I am has sent me to you. '" The word 'I am' in Hebrew is
"haya (Ehyeh) Asher haya (Ehyeh)."
However, for some unknown
reason, the Hebrews called the one and only God Adonai. After the fall of
Israel, by order of Pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt, six men from each
of the twelve tribes of Israel were selected and translated into Greek in Alexandria
over 72 days. This is called the Septuagint. The name of the one and only God,
who was called Adonai, was written as YHWH and called in Greek as Kurius. In
Latin, it is called Dominus.
Then, it is said that the
diaspora living in Alexandria added the vowels a, ai of adonai to YHWH,
converting it to YHaWHai and calling it Yahweh. Later, in the translation
process, the YHWH part was written in English as Jehovah. However, today, the
New International Version in the United States translates Kyrios as The LORD,
and both the Old and New Testaments are written this way, causing the
expressions Adonai and Yahweh to disappear. The King James Version translated
in Britain also follows this. The Greek word Kyrios is a translation of the
Hebrew word Adonai.
Unlike the English Bible, the
Korean Bible (Revised Standard Version) uses the words “Jehovah” and “Lord.” In the Old Testament, such as
Genesis 4:26 and Psalm 110:1, it is written as “Jehovah,” and in the New Testament,
such as Acts 2:34, it is written as “Lord,” which corresponds to the English LORD. Most countries’ translated Bibles translate the English Bible as “Jehovah” and “The LORD,” so this follows suit. Some
countries translate the Old Testament as “Jehovah,” while others translate it as “The LORD.”
In this way, they changed
the name of the one and only God to Haya Asher Haya, Adonai, Yahweh, Jehovah,
The LORD, and the Lord to fit their language. Names are proper nouns and should
not be changed. They even change the name of the one and only God at will, so
how can they know if the God they believe in is the one and only God? A
believer firmly believes that there is one God, but it may not be the case.
This is taking the name of the one and only God in vain.
